There is a familiar saying: “We recruit in our own image.” This bias doesn’t end with demographic distinctions like race or gender, or with the recruiting process, for that matter. Colleagues gravitate toward the people who think and express themselves in a similar way. As a result, organizations often end up with like-minded teams. When this happens, as in the case of our biotech R&D team, we have what psychologists call functional bias

So how do we prevent this from happening?

There are a lot of tools in the HR market place to assist with hiring.  And perhaps I am bias here after having done my research and choosing the LUMINA tool to use within organizations for recruiting, identifying leaders, sales process training and development and professional development.  LUMINA offers so much value and information for an organization to build on.

LUMINA offers the recruitment team many tools as a point of reference to identify blind spots in teams, hiring criteria and reduces the likelihood of hiring themselves over and over again.

How does LUMINA work to build diversity?

Within the LUMINA Spark portrait (the prerequisite tool for all our other tools) we deliver content to the participant that enables them to see themselves and how they may show up with someone with similar personality and with someone who is their opposite.  
We include details of their qualities, aspects and communication styles.
Paired with suggestions on how it may look to work with others that mirror themselves and that are their opposites, this allows participants to become conscious in their dealings at work. (and home)
It's really the first step in organizations building their diverse teams and departments.

It's important for an organization to know what they have, what they are starting with and get clear of what they are looking for and identifying where the deficit is.

Additionally, LUMINA can then offer tools to identify sales strengths and blind spots, as well as leader strengths and blind spots all working with the diversity of their individuals.

Both of these tools offer great recruiting data for infusing teams that may find themselves missing elements of diversity.  
Simply by using the LUMINA Team tool, organizations can easily work to fill voids within any aspect of their business, from accounting departments to customer service.  Ensuring that teams understand who has what strengths that can be called on and where and how the teams weaknesses can be filled.

As for building an organization of effective and respected leaders.  The LUMINA leader tool can identify leader strengths and blind spots enabling the search for particular leadership style to be much simpler.  
Once an organization has established where they may be coming up short and identify what they are looking for in a leader, by applying the LUMINA Leader tool with a TEAM tool, you are then given insight into a more effective way to resolve what may not be working or missing in their leadership.
